With Xiaomi now having successfully established their reputation as a company that outs capable smartphones at seriously low prices, it's no surprise that they are trying to one-up themselves, one way of which is by introducing the Xiaomi Redmi 2.<br /> <br /> The Xiaomi Redmi 2 is basically a slightly lighter, slightly slimmer, and a more efficient version of the Redmi 1S. What's changed is that it's now capable of running in 4G LTE. What I appreciate about the Redmi 2 at this area of the device is that it still offers a customizable notification LED even at this price point, which most similarly priced devices don't.<br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div> <br /> The Xiaomi Redmi 2 still offers that "clean-look" rear plastic shell, with the Mi logo, the camera, and the LED flash the only items you'll find. The sides meanwhile still carry the chrome-finish volume rocker and sleep/wake button.<br /> <br /> <span style="font-size: large;"><b>Display</b></span><br /> <br /> The Xiaomi Redmi 2 sports a 4.7-inch HD IPS display at a 1280x720 display resolution and has a 312ppi pixel density ratio. If you've seen other iterations of the MIUI, then there's nothing much to see here, other than being able to download customizable skins from the sizeable Xiaomi community (which is a fantastic community by the way).<br /> <br /> <span style="font-size: large;"><b>Performance</b></span><br /> <br /> The Xiaomi Redmi 2 sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, an Adreno 306 GPU, and 1GB of RAM. It's a budget combination that should perform at par or even slightly better than local smartphones at the same price range. As usual, we ran tests to measure the device's numbers performance, and here's what we got.<br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div> <br /> The Redmi 2 scores a respectable 20322 on AnTuTu, definitely a better score than the 18000+ ratings fetched by Mediateks with the same specifications. We can also safely say that the device performs slightly better than the LG Nexus 4. Speed is relative, as the Redmi 2 will feel sluggish as compared to other higher-tier smartphones, but I digress.<br /> <br /> Android 4.4.4 KitKat is the OS the device operates on out of the box, but there are frequent OTA updates from Xiaomi itself. We don't have a clue however if the smartphone is going to receive 5.0.x Lollipop, though there are unofficial ROMs already available for manual pushing. Not that it matters, since you won't be able to identify the aesthetics between two OSes because of MIUI.<br /> <br /> <span style="font-size: large;"><b>Audio and Video</b></span><br /> <br /> Sporting an acceptable 4.7-inch display with HD settings, the Xiaomi Redmi 2 is definitely capable of handling your viewing habits, no matter if you're watching Game of Thrones or some other TV series. As far as our trials go, the details on videos you watch are easily identifiable even on this device's small screen, given that the item you're watching is also of a high resolution.<br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div> <br /> Sound-wise, the Redmi 2's small external speaker surprisingly packs a wallop. We ran electronic dance music on the device and found out that it gave off a spectacular sound range: We were able to identify highs, mids, and lows without any actual difficulty, as again opposed to other smartphones at the same price point. We were expecting more oomph in the bass department, but the Xiaomi Redmi 2 already blew away our expectations relatively.<br /> <br /> On another note, the Redmi 2's earpiece offers stable and clear voice audio when receiving calls.<br /> <br /> <span style="font-size: large;"><b>Gaming</b></span><br /> <br /> As always, we don't mess around when it comes to gaming performance, thus we immediately loaded the rather heavy Android FPS N.O.V.A. 3 and ran it. Every time an extra in-game event loads (explosions, shields), the game lags and the device chokes significantly, but catches up as soon as the event is over. As much as we want to cry that this shouldn't be the case, a Snapdragon 410 can only bring so much to the table.<br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div> <br /> Other FPS games such as Edge of Tomorrow also bring about the same experience, especially on the multiple events. Other milder games such as Dead Trigger 2 run at 100% though.<br /> <br /> <span style="font-size: large;"><b>Camera</b></span><br /> <br /> The Xiaomi Redmi 2 sports an 8-megapixel rear camera w/ autofocus and LED flash and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. It also offers a multitude of photo-modifying options such as image temperature filters, image modifications (such as blurs), panorama, and HDR.<br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div> <br /> Speaking relatively, the Redmi 2 produces great images, so long as the object being captured or the environment itself is well-lit, and that the object is steady. The colors are correct and look awesome when viewed on the device's display. Viewed widescreen (such as on PC), there's some muddying and loss of detail, though it's already expected. It has a great display, a fantastic battery life, and customizable features not available on most Androids. However, with recent outings of more powerful devices just a thousand bucks more (like the Cherry Mobile Flare X), I wouldn't be too keen on getting one, except for purely budget issues or just being a fan of the brand.
